Fashion trends and style in 2000


The 2000 take some styles from the 90’s and change it and adapted to the new millennium. One of the notable subculture of teenagers is the heavy metal fashion; also the pop punk fashion is characteristic of this decade, wearing baggy jeans, and spiky hair and trucker hats. Representative bands of the mentioned movement are Blink-182, Lit and Sum41.


Another trend of 2000 is the hip hop fashion, clothing jean jackets with matching jeans and bandanas. For the women, the cowboy boots became popular, also adopting many trends from the last decades.


By the mid 2000 gel bracelets were very popular and also the smart casual style except in special events or places. The Polo tops and shirts for young men are popular, also the Nike Air Force 1 and Converse shoes.


From Japan the kimonos and jewelry were accepted very well with the release of the film Memoirs of a Geisha. For men the military attire became popular among indie while women wore a type of feminine versions.


In 2000 the pop singer Britney Spears set trends like Dixie pants and trucker hats. Many young girls no only try to wear like Britney Spears; also there are other pop stars or bands with each fashion trends.


Recently in the last three years the young men wear rumpled jeans and sweatshirts, gym shorts and athletic shirts. In other hand women fashion accessory is the denim waistcoat. By 2009 many store owners have been moved by the influence of the green movement as well as celebrities.


The music also has broken all the limits; there are bands of different styles of music and also with different fashion trends. By this way the technology has made many advances and one example of this are the MP3 players and the iPods.

Fashion trends and style in 1990’s




The 1990’s were characteristic because of the minimalist styles and the contradictory trends. The rise of grunge fashion appears in 1992, this movement includes men and women wearing flannel shirts and outdoor clothing. Thanks to Nirvana and especially to Kurt Kobain the grunge became popular.





  • Silhouettes
    Leftover shoulder pads and the long line Jacket were several silhouettes that identify the decade. The trouser silhouettes included baggy hip hop look of Adidas. Pants and sportswear that were similar to general uniform were commonly used by men. Later the blue jeans became a classic within with or blue shirt.
    The classic blazer used in 1980’s still was popular for women over thirty five, and for young girls the petticoat dresses became very popular because they were feminine and distinctive. Later at mid of the decade the ultimo bra became the best hit, because of the natural look and also because actresses wore one in movies, like Julia Roberts.
    By this decade the use of accessories like mobile phones or pashminas became usual. The use of lycra was an innovation in all sense, men like women could use it. Lycra was mixed with fibers to improve and develop wearing and gather qualities of fabrics.

Fashion trends and style in 1980’s


The 1980’s were curios because for some reason the fashion wasn´t the strongest point like in 1960's and 1970’s. In these years characters like Princess Diana or Margaret Thatcher were the center of the fashion attention because their dressing styles were copying. In these years the power of dressing gives woman the feeling that they could choose how they want to be.



The main characteristics of the 1980’s were the influence of television series like “Dinasty and “Dallas”, series that became popular because of the decoration of the clothes. Another reason was the women big shoulder, giving a soft masculine effect to the designs. The third reason was that designers have trouble dropping shoulder pads.



The most important characteristics of the 1980’s are Normandy rose jeans, sandals, jean jacket, ripped jeans, heavy eyebrows, playboy bunny shirts, sailor hats, head bands, piercing, drive at movie theaters, etc.

    Madonna began shining as a pop star during the 1980’s proving that she could be influential in the fashion trends of the girls, principally teenagers. Her music, dancing style and her look were important elements that the people try to imitate in the way they look physically. The girls want to be like Madonna, dance, sing and obviously wearing as her. Also gloves made Madonna popular as well as stockings and necklaces.

Fashion trends and styles in 1970's


In the early 1970's one fashion trend that continues from the late 1960's was the hippie look. In the 1970's the women began wearing skirt lengths, and in some way they did what they want, because one day a girl could wear a short mini skirt and the next day a maxi dress or whatever they can found that were on style. Also the miniskirts became part of the quotidian life of the women in the early 1970's.



In the 1970's Disco look appears as a new trend, using the memorable hot pants and spandex tops. The shiny colors also were important elements of disco look, but more important than disco look it was the disco dancing, giving sense to the 1970's. But there were problems with the girls at a disco, because of their wearing that confuses men and in sometimes demonstrating that mini dresses were a symbol of exploitation instead of freedom.
Another trend was the platform shoes, becoming the style for men and women, also the fitted blazer, which flared faintly at the hip. At first, the platform shoes started with a quite sole which began to grow, becoming very popular.

    Farrah Fawcett became popular because its feathered hairstyle, also hot rollers were part of the lives of the people, keeping their hair looking flipped out.

  • Punk
    Originally from London, this movement was a reaction to the economic problems of the period. This movement was created through disorder, for example images of murders, criminals rising as iconographic status. Fashion trends of punk movement include ripped jeans and scrappy haircut like the members of the band Sex Pistols.
